Happy World Tourism Day, everyone! Today, September 27, people all over the world are celebrating the joy of travel and the people who make it possible.
Why This Day Matters
World Tourism Day was first celebrated in 1980. The date marks the day when the World Tourism Organization statutes were adopted in 1970. Now the organization is known as UN Tourism. And the goal is simple: to help everyone understand how much tourism matters to our societies, economies, and cultures.
In fact, tourism supports about one in every ten jobs on Earth, and women make up around 40% of the people working in the industry. It also builds understanding between people. Countries with good tourism tend to be more peaceful and welcoming. This can be a true reminder that travel does more than fill our photo albums.
